Virginians need to prepare for Hurricane Earl

RICHMOND, VA – Virginians need to prepare now for Hurricane Earl, which is forecasted to be a Category 3 or 4 hurricane as it approaches Virginia’s coast later this week.

The forecasted path for Earl has changed several times so it is important for Virginians, especially those living in the Hampton Roads region, to pay close attention to the storm.

Those in Hampton Roads should review their evacuation and shelter plans. Also, people should make sure they have their emergency supplies ready.

“A small change in Earl’s forecasted path could bring a major hurricane to Virginia,” said Michael Cline, state coordinator for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

“Virginia state agencies are getting ready for the storm, and so should residents.” The Commonwealth has activated the Virginia Evacuation Coordination Team for Operational Response to assess Earl’s potential impact and to take necessary actions.

The Virginia Emergency Operations Center is now at Increased Readiness Condition. VDEM and the Virginia Department of Transportation have created a series of online videos to help families understand storm surge (the reason for large-scale evacuations), and how an evacuation would work.

The videos are available at http://www.youtube.com/vaemergency

Cross-Walk Safety
Within the Town of Luray, there are many highly visible "Pedestrian Cross-Walks". Each day many pedestrians must use these "Cross-Walks" in order to cross our streets.

The motoring public must yield the right-of-way to all pedestrians entering a Cross-Walk. Please...Think Safe and Be Safe!

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT:
BEWARE OF SCAMS:  Today, the internet and international phone calls make it easy for victims, many of them older Americans, to be targeted from anywhere in the world. Scam artists use false names and electronic tricks to hide who and where they really are.  U.S.-Canadian cross border fraud task forces are helping stop these crimes, but prevention still is the best medicine.  Learn the warning signs:  [Click here]

Walkers, Runners, Bicyclists Safety:
We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful town with so many places to walk, jog and bike. Places such as our new Greenway are used daily by many of us. However, please remember the following safety tips:

If you are walking, jogging or biking during low light conditions or after darkness, wear bright or reflective clothing.

Always stop before crossing a street.

Bikes must have lights and reflectors after dark.

Children under the age of 15 must wear a helmet while biking.

If walking, jogging or biking at night, please have a friend with you.

Bikes are not allowed on the sidewalks.

Please...Think Safe and Be Safe!
